Interacting with another person means seeing them through the lens of our own history. We don’t truly see them for who they are. This sounds like a simple enough concept, but it’s not. Most people spend their entire lives not really knowing that their reality is distorted by the pain of their childhood. And that’s fine because for many people that’s still a great life. But some of us want more. Some of us realize, if we slow everything down, that we’re not really responding to other people in real time. We’re responding to echos of ourselves.
When we reach a certain age, usually 40, we start to notice patterns. We’ve had enough time and relationships to start putting it all together. Are we repeating relationship dynamics? Repeating trauma? Repeating pain? Even when we know our patterns, it takes a tremendous amount of energy to climb the mountain and see what’s on the other side.
I was lucky enough to have my patterns disrupted in a big bad way when I was 33. The best way I can describe it is that someone saw so deep into me that I wasn’t even sure who I was anymore. It felt like my ego structure was in pieces on the ground in front of me. I could see it all but I wasn’t sure how to put it back together. This jarring experience afforded me an opportunity to develop my own hypotheses about human development, based solely on experience.
What resulted is an offering I call consulting only for lack of a better word. It is a non-therapeutic conversation space. My only agenda is to be present enough to see the person in front of me for who they really are, not who my history tells me they are.
